Moses Hoskins
Lobby Series #9, FEBRUARY 1 - MARCH 31 @ The Lobby Last year, artist Moses Hoskins discovered a pile of 100 "forgotten" mixed media works on paper in the back of one of his studio closets. Faced with choosing between leaving the work where it was or throwing it out to make room for the new, Moses found a third option that seem to satisfy both of the first two. He attacked the work. Literally. Beginning first by cutting, and slicing and tearing, and then reconfiguring and attaching those fragments with the tape and glue he had on hand, Hoskins' new work began emerging from the old. Portions of original depictions were erased by incising and peeling or obliterated with applications of gesso. New drawings were done, with any kind of marking utensils as before; lead pencils, felt markers, wax crayons, oil sticks... Caprice or deliberation determined new boundaries. Regions emerged. Voids extended. Colors and shapes found new rhythm.... "It all sounds very dramatic.' he explains, "I could go on but you catch the drift."
