Lee Whittier

@ The Lab

The Lab Gallery presents digital video artist Lee Whittier .  In a site-specific installation of new work, the artist transforms the storefront at 47th and Lexington Avenue into a 24-hour display of light and movement, altering perceptions of the urban view shed and provoking response in the passerby.  Through projected video, mirrors, and haze the artist manipulates the streetscape into an amorphic world of abstraction and beauty. The video here speaks to an urban architecture made of light weighing no more than that of a candle. Whittier, who is represented by Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art, has received praise for his work from The New York Times ("luscious"), New York Arts magazine, and others.  This site-specific installation represents Whittier's continued interest in what art critic Robert Knafo describes as "Immaterialism."
